Meet the breed
Scottish Folds are very intelligent, sweet-tempered, usually soft-spoken, and easily adaptable to new people and situations. They are loyal and tend to bond with one person in the household. While they will usually allow others to cuddle and pet them, their primary attachment becomes quickly clear as they single out their chosen human. They thrive on attention, but it must be on their own terms. They are not clingy, demanding cats and usually prefer to be near you rather than on your lap.
Ears and appearance
Despite being folded, the Fold's ears are still expressive and swivel to listen, lay back in anger, and prick up when a can of food is opened. The fold can become less pronounced when the cat is upset or ill. The folded ears typically do not make the cat more susceptible to mites or ear infections.
These cats come with a short or long coat (the long-coated versions are often called Highland Folds) in solid, tabby, bicolor, and parti-color patterns. Eye color is determined by coat color, and some Folds have two different colored eyes.
After their ears, the first thing you will notice is their habit of posing in odd positions: flat out on the floor like a little frog, sitting up like a meerkat, or lying on their back with paws in the air.
Personality and play
Scottish Folds are a smart, moderately active cat. They enjoy teaser toys that test their agility and puzzle toys that challenge their intelligence. Their favorite activities involve human interaction. Because they are so sociable, they do not do well being left alone for long periods. Adopting two Folds can help keep each other company.
Common questions
Temperament: very even. They are not abnormally active, but more energetic than just a lap cat, and they are sociable and friendly.
Shedding: yes, about the same as any other cat. They are not hypoallergenic.
Size: medium with a compact build. Females typically weigh 6 to 9 pounds and males 9 to 13 pounds.
Lifespan: on average 11 to 15 years, depending on environment, daily health and exercise routine, and any pre-existing conditions.
Care
Comb the coat weekly to remove dead hair and distribute skin oils; longhaired Folds may need grooming a couple of times a week. Brush the teeth (daily is best, weekly is better than nothing) and trim the nails every couple of weeks.
Wipe the corners of the eyes with a soft, damp cloth, using a separate area for each eye. Check the ears weekly, especially if they are tightly folded; if dirty, wipe with a cotton ball or soft damp cloth moistened with a 50-50 mixture of cider vinegar and warm water. Avoid cotton swabs.
Keep the litter box spotlessly clean, and keep your Fold indoors to protect against diseases, attacks, and traffic. We'll let you know when we are expecting kittens!
